An analysis of technology’s role in the relationship between the two industries shows not only a shared need for data but, crucially, that the betting industry’s reliance on a thriving sport industry as a source of credible data makes upholding sport’s integrity a common goal. By drawing on examples from the sport industry, it highlights the challenges faced by sport policymakers in trying to balance the stigma of gambling and threat of match-fixing, with attempts to capture a share of the profits from sports betting.
